When games get large enough, the Prostitute role is assigned. In games where a Prostitute exists, the Detective should stay hidden during the first night in order to see which faction the Prostitute aligns. If the Prostitute aligns Innocent, then the Detective may come out into the public. If, however, the Prostitute aligns Mafia or Camorra, then the Detective may wish to remain hidden until a confirmed non-innocent is investigated. This way, the non-innocent Prostitute will not know who the Detective is and will likely disable someone else, such as their own Mafia/Camorra.
During games where a Terrorist exists, it is recommended the Detective appoint a deputy so that they can disarm any bombs the Terrorist sets. However, unless the person you appointed is Innocent beyond a shadow of a doubt, it is highly recommended the Detective not reveal themselves to the deputy and refrain from performing any Detective commands during the following night until the VERY LAST second. This way, if the person you appointed turns out to be Mafia/Camorra-aligned, then you can rest easy knowing that they did not kill you off.
