The four kinds of Homicide
“There are 4 kinds of Homicide: felonious, excusable, justifiable, and praiseworthy.”(Ambrose Bierce)
Every morning, every murder, every failure and every other event, will affect every players actions. Thus even choosing not to murder, murdering your own or doing plain stupid murders against the public detective will be your tools of manipulation.
Felonious
Most players assume every murder is meant to kill, and any good mafia hopes each morning a player is found by the docks floating like a log. However some murders are truly felonious, such as killing lazy first so much, players getting the doctor role saved him instead of public detective. However every successful murder can be considered felonious and thus every night you murder an innocent you have succeeded in satisfying your mafia nature. The only time a murder is not expected to succeed is when the mafia decide to check if the doctor is dead, and the only way to do that is to try and murder the public detective. Any good doctor will be constantly saving him, but every dog has his day and sometimes luck may be on your side.
Excusable
What is an excusable kill? Many players will wonder, when is a kill not excusable? Well one strategy in the game for mafia players to maintain innocence is to murder the village idiot after purposely exposing him. When under accusation some mafia players will sacrifice their allies in order to avoid execution, some players will even do this early in game to establish a clear fake innocent cover.
Justifiable
So when is a kill justifiable? Well in real life a justifiable kill can be described as killing during war, to protect your own life or valuables, euthanasia, capital punishment and in some countries even crimes of passion are described as justifiable. In mafia each murder is based on priority, however no matter the priority kills will be prevent by a good doctor or the game can change based on how the primary roles are played.
However since you don't know who plays each of these roles the most justifiable kills are those done with intent to prevent certain tasks, in which i can only think of a few. Killing the wife in a family to prevent birth, murdering any stupid public primary role and murdering the innocent freemason/s.
Praiseworthy
There is no kill more praiseworthy then wiping out the detectives first night, i kid you not this task is easier said then done. Most pro players will have seen in once or twice in 500 games. However they normally occur when a pro player lucks out and knows innocents have a newbie doctor or just plain lucks out. Why? well a good doctor always saves the public detective from the first night till his death, and the only way to be sure the good doctor is dead is to try and kill the public detective. Other then that killing doctor first night can be considered skillful but nothing beats knowing you have the best advantage from day 1.
