User accounts

You don't need a user account to connect to Mafia and enjoy non-crippled gameplay.

However, having one has many advantages:

• Your nickname is reserved for you.
• If you lose connectivity and leave behind a ghost connection in the game, you can kill it.
• The game keeps track of the amount of victories and defeats you have experienced.
• You can use points earned from victories to buy extra weapons for the Rock-paper-scissors minigame or different profiles.
• Your gender is saved in your account instead of being chosen randomly every time you connect.
• Some preferences are also saved in your account.

How to login without an account

After connecting, you should be greeted by a login prompt. Simply type:

!nick NICKNAME

Where NICKNAME is your desired nickname and press ENTER to login with that nickname. However, if the nickname you chose is associated with an existing user account, it is reserved for that account's owner and you won't be able to use it. In this case, simply try again with another nickname.

If you're using the Flash Client, you can write NICKNAME in the Auto-nickname field of the Settings dialogue and then save it to add a "Connect as NICKNAME" option to the Game menu, which logs you in to your nickname of choice automatically.

Creating an account

After connecting to Mafia (but before logging in) use this command:

!register NICKNAME PASSWORD E-MAIL REFERRER

With your desired NICKNAME, PASSWORD and a valid E-MAIL address. Your e-mail address will not be validated, so you can provide a false one if you prefer, but if you ever lose your password, we will only help you recover it by communication with the provided e-mail address. If you do not lose your password, you'll never be sent any e-mails from Mafia, and your address will never be disclosed to anyone.

The REFERRER is optional and consists in the nickname of the user who invited you to play Mafia (if any).

When your account is successfully created, you can login with:

!nick NICKNAME PASSWORD

If you are using the Flash Client, write both your NICKNAME and PASSWORD in the Auto-nickname and Auto-password fields of the Settings dialog and then save it to add a "Connect as NICKNAME" option to the Game menu which logs you in to your registered account automatically.

Bonuses and Referrers

After reaching certain amounts of total played games, you will be given a small extra bonus in mafia points (which can be used to buy Profiles or certain other things). At the time this was written there were bonuses at 50, 250, 500, 1000, 2500, 5000 and 10000 played games. Bonuses can only be received at the end of Mafia games (not Rock-Paper-Scissors). Draws do not count towards the total amount of played games.

If the player specified a referrer when registering his account, the referrer will also get a small(er) bonus simultaneously. This is meant to encourage players to spread the word about Mafia - Players can be the referrer to any amount of other accounts.

Killing a ghost connection

Before logging in, if there is a ghost connection using your registered nickname or IP address, you can kill it by using:

!ghost NICKNAME PASSWORD

Changing your nickname

You can't change the nickname associated with your user account. You can, however, create multiple accounts, if you wish to do so.

Changing your password

To change your password, use this command before logging in:

!pass NICKNAME OLDPASSWORD NEWPASSWORD

You can then login with the new password.

Recovering your password

If you lost your password, please contact an operator. Password recovery is performed manually, so be careful not to lose it. If the e-mail address associated with your account is fake, or if it isn't the first time you lose your password, we may simply refuse to help you. In this case, you can always create a new account.
