Though you are old and no longer any good at actual investigations, you are unstoppable in the service of good - your iron will, contacts and experience will help you overcome bombs, seduction, monsters and lesser police officers. Your presence will also hold back nuclear holocaust a little, since the government trusts you to do your mission. However, because you are not a citizen, you can't vote in the daily execution, and you won't be rewarded as generously for your help - especially if you fail.
